$500 for that baby in the window

Okay, today I'm going to mix it up a bit and talk about abortion. Firstly I'm going to talk about an idea so bizarre I had to read it twice to see that I hadn't got my wires crossed. In Texas, (where else?) they want to introduce a law that will offer you $500 not to have an abortion.

Now I don't know about you, but if I'd made an educated decision to have an abortion and someone offered me $500 not to have one, I'd certainly change my mind in a heartbeat and take the money, thinking of all the lovely shoes I could buy....if I was, er, unhinged? I suppose some religious nutters, Bush etc, think people who were going to have abortions would be so easily swayed. Makes my blood boil.

And on the other side of the coin, what about this heart warming tale? Now, I don't mean to be judgmental, but okay I'm going to be. But what's the story with this woman, who is suing Planned Parenthood over a failed abortion which resulted in her daughter being born (the woman is now bringing the child up)?

Now, I don't mean to be rude, but isn't that kid going to be severely fucked up knowing its mother wanted it aborted and is reluctantly bringing it up? I mean, shouldn't she have had the kid adopted?

And Hallmark, if you're reading this, there's a market for a new kind of card with the slogan:

'You may have tried to abort me and sued to have someone else pay to feed me, but I'll always love you mom.'

Normal people won't be swayed, but do you know who will be? Addicted woman that have no interest in delivering a healthy child because that's not stipulated in the bill. BAD idea Texas.

Some people leave me speechless! Paying someone to reconsider having an abortion is just insulting. Can you imagine the emotional trauma of seeing through an unwanted pregnancy, and then the rollercoaster of emotions and hormones after the birth when you have to have the baby adopted?

I'm not so sure the mother who is now raising her daughter deserves our condemnation, though. Both of the doctors do sound like they've been extremely negligent, and asking for compensation for a surgical procedure that was negligently performed seems quite reasonable. It doesn't mean that she doesn't love her daughter, who may never know about all of this anyway.

Why isn't more money put toward sex education and educating about birth control?

Your posts make me laugh, girl :)

Hallmark needs you!!

This is disgusting. I get so annoyed when I hear about the amount of money that goes into these half baked ideas. I have to agree with thatgirl, who knows who this will attract to keep a child that doesnt deserve that life.

SICK. SICK. SICK.

Conservatives repulse me with their lack of long-term thinking. Or should we say, self-centered thinking. Because we KNOW that what they want is an uneducated populace, and the best way to get it is by encouraging under-educated teenage mothers to have babies.

well said emma. It's so sick and twisted to think that someone that could be swayed by a mere $500 bucks would be better off raising this kid, cause do we know for sure they will do the right thing and go for adoption?, than following through with their decision to abort.

oh, I forgot, I also named you a thinking blogger.

Make it $600 and you can have one of my teens - you even get pick of the litter!

Seriously, this baby buying fad is crazy. Texas are just jumping on Madonna's bandwagon if you ask me.

I think being unjudgemental is so overrated. Because it means shutting off plain old common sense and being all patient and good-two-shoes about asinine behavior. Blah.
You go girl, I agree with you completely. And Also with That Girl'd comment. Personally, I think if someone doesn't want the baby in the first place, more fool you for goading them into being a reluctant parents.

that girl...oh God, I didn't think that druggies would just take the money. I hope the bill doesn't get passed.

meva...maybe I am being too harsh towards the woman who is suing for the 'botched' abortion...but personally I don't think she should be suing.

ice...that Hallmark card was a bit sick but I think I had a point :)

joie de vivre...you should be glad you don't live in the US, surely an idea this half baked wouldn't get through in NZ?

pilar...like meva says, why don't they put more money into sex education and I don't mean those idiotic 'Virgin is not a dirty word' campaigns that encourage ignorance about safe sex.

dirty filthy princess...thanks for nominating me darling.

fussy bitch...re baby buying, I know that maybe their hearts are in the right place about what about Angelina and Brad who've just adopted another kid...all well and good but have you seen how gorgeous the kid is...why don't they really help someone out and adopt an ugly kid? ;)

peach...I just thank God (if he exists) that I don't live in Texas.

a liquid blue...the frightening thing is some people are so dumb they really will be goaded into being parents if this law goes through.

they also need to have "congrats on your happy little accident" for expecting moms!
that abortion thing is so stupid because people will take the 500 bucks, and then "induce" themselves, i reckon.

This is stupid and I don't think its going to do anything to stop abortions. Heck I won't be surprised if Texans who want to keep their babies lie and say they're considering an abortion just to get the money. Its not like they can force somebody to put an unborn child up for adoption. Of course there may be something about giving the money back if you don't adopt out the kid.

The case against Planned Parenthood is not the first. While claims like these haven't gone down too well in the USA (because having a child is an incalculable blessing), the highest level courts in both the UK and Australia have accepted them: the Australian law is that an "involuntary parent" gets the full cost of childcare etc up to the age of 18 ($650,000 or so), while the UK courts are much more conservative - recognition of the loss of autonomy as to how many kids to have is the basis of the award there.

Just a week or two ago here in NZ, it was announced that one doctor had been so bad that six mothers had become pregnant through failed procedures.
