This case has really knocked me for six. An Austrian man kept his daughter Elisabeth locked up in a cellar for twenty four years, had sex with her, fathered seven children, three of which he and his wife legally adopted (his wife claims she didn't know her own daughter was the mother), the other three kids lived with Elisabeth in the cellar and never saw daylight. The last child died at birth and the abuser threw it in an incinerator. It is just so horrendous it is impossible to get one's head around it.
Usually you try and forget that people like that exist and are free and are walking around. And sometimes it is so hard to look my older daughter in the face when she is scared about something she saw in a movie and tell her that nothing bad is going to happen to her, that I will stop bad people from ever getting to her. But this case completely broke my faith in humanity. And okay, no doubt this guy had bad things done to him as a child. Yes, it is an isolated incident. But these people are out there and there is nothing we can do about it but pray they get caught and put in jail.
The flip side of the story is ironically, that the human spirit is surprisingly resilient. It is reported that Elisabeth and two of her captive children who are now being treated in a psychiatric hospital, are said to be in surprisingly good condition, except for the need to adapt to daylight.
One official said: "As we were driving with one of the boys towards the hospital he told me he was very happy to be driven in a car. He had seen cars on TV and always wanted to have a ride in one.
"I could not detect any obvious mental or physical malfunctions in him or his sister."

I heard one the imprisoned children had lost all her teeth. They were probably deficient in Vitamin D.
It is an awful, awful thing to happen - and to think that this was a supposedly loving husband and father ... it's hard to even contemplate it, isn't it?
But we have to try to maintain a sense of perspective: despite the fact that there was a similar case in Austria relatively recently, I think we can assume that such abominations are few and far between.
Far more useful, I'd think, to follow the path you've been treading and try to build up the confidence of the kiddies - life will throw up enough real, in-yer-face problems without worrying about the ones that are unlikely.
It's sickening. I don't have children, and can't even imagine how you try to explain to a kid how this could happen. To be perfectly frank, things like this - and all of the other horrendous, unbelievable things that people do - are a big reason why I don't have children. I know that seems extreme, but I just have no faith in humanity. Time and time again, man's propensity towards evil outweighs any good there might be.
It really is horrific. Had the man never heard of using a condom?
The strange thing is that those poor kids that never left the cellar probably thought that was normal life and stand a good chance of being mentally screwed as they now discover it most certainly isn't.

I read about this too. It is absolutely horrific. The kids probably lost their teeth due to the fact that not only did they never see daylight, but they have never had medical or dental care. This man deserves to go to prison and have some huge guy rip him a new asshole on a nightly basis. I hope he suffers what they all suffered. And you cannot tell me that the mother was completely ignorant...This went on in her OWN house. He had to have abused her as well, and controlled her every move as well. So sickening.

It's almost impossible to grasp the concept of having your entire life sabotaged...
I read that they think the little boy, the 5-year old stands the best chance at a "normal" life but that the older two and Elisabeth herself are likely to find integration back into life much more difficult. They have to be taught simple things like spacial awareness and not to get anxious in a space bigger than their cellar. They have to learn to look on real-life human faces other than their own for the first time. Their language is peculiar too and apart from being imprisoned all their lives, any one of the other circumstances would be enough to fuck up the average person: their grandfather is their father; he repeatedly raped their mother, his daughter for 24 years; he imprisoned them all in a cellar; he picked some over others to be brought upstairs; he burnt their dead brother without the dignity of a funeral; he deceived everybody in the worst possible ways and warped their lives so abnormally as not to be believed.
The above-ground children - although ostensibly brought up normally, now also have to absorb this sick incestuous truth about their family and learn to see this poor, damaged pale, toothless, prematurely aged, white-haired and bent, but still young woman as their mother, after believind for all these years she'd abandoned them as babies.
What Elisabeth had to endure at the hands of her father for all these years beggars belief. She alone knew both worlds above and below stairs and she was imprisoned and raped continually by her own father.
This man is purest evil. I don't know what can be done with him to serve justice.

It's an appalling case and one that has been receiving extensive TV coverage here in the UK. A lot of the questioning by UK journos has been along thel lines of "Is there something in Austrian society that leads to this type of thing"... which I found extremely crass and offensive. It's a sad fact that this type of abuse can happen in any society. What makes it worse is that nobody knew, realized, suspected or did anything about it for so long.
i can't believe the mother knew nothing. she must be extremely stupid or in extreme denial and look the other way of his horrific doings.

i am still a bit stunned on this one...i keep thinking, how did no one know? what was the deal with the mom? isn't she a part of this horrific evil? she just stayed there and raised those children...where the hell did she think they came from? this just irritates me on so many levels...yes the man was pure evil, but what kind of evil was the mom of the 24 year old? did she not ask questions? could she not report to the police? she was indifferent to the abuse, which makes her a participant in my eyes...when you shut your eyes to an evil, you are approving of it...sorry but they should both burn!

I lost faith a long while ago, Emma. I'm not going to get morose about this particular story.
Humanity certainly encompasses some very unsavoury specimen. To us, free-range humans roaming in the daylight, those people's captivity is unthinkable. To them, it was their 'normality'. As for the captor, it goes to show how powerful and dangerous human nature can be. It makes me ashamed to be human when faced with such behaviour.
The mind reels when you hear about stuff like this. Didn't the girl's mother know? Suspect? Especially when these other kids kept arriving on the doorstep.
I have never been in favor of capital punishment. It seems like most murders act on impulse. However, when I read about this guy, it was clear his act was deliberate-20 years of evil. Even though he didn't take a life, I would have no problem with the state killing him--SLOWLY.
It's a fucked up story, no doubt. What gets me is that we've all done something wrong at one point in our lives. We all knew we were doing it. We all rationalised reasons for doing whatever it was, but this guy goes way beyond that. I refuse to believe we've heard the end of this. There's no way that this could happen and only people within the family knew? No chance. I bet more than a few people in this guy's contacts list were aware of the cellar.

I read about a case the other day on the BBC website where some (now adult) kids found babies in their mum's freezer in the cellar.
I know these things are rare, but they sure make you wonder what the world is coming to and potentially can steer you towards being ultra protective of your kids or those close to you.
pog...as a woman i can easily say this...her daughter disappears for 24 years in the cellar of the home she resides...has children and her husband just brings babies home for her...that is beyond stupidity and moves to culpability in my book...
Horrible beyond words, really. The mother apparently did not want to fuck the dad, in a huge way. So, she just let him do what he wanted to their child. She knew. No one alive could possibly be that dense, could they?
