Right now, adults and kids in Haiti are subsisting on 'cookies' made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening because it is the only thing they can afford.
So excuse me if I don't have any sympathy for the Fat Acceptance movement (NAAFA) whose objective it is to battle prejudice against fat people. To NAAFA I say, please stop being ridiculous.
No, I don't think women should aspire to be waifs, and obviously, diets and diet pills are a massive moneymaking con, but does that make it is okay to be fat? Firstly it has massive health risks, but even if it didn't, is it really a good idea to guzzle your body weight in soda every day? In an attempt to legitamize the fact that they are a bunch of lazy slobs who don't want to exercise or control their calorific intake, NAAFA (I need hardly add that this bunch of fruitcakes are based in California) puts forward this manifesto:
"There is one thing that FA blogs have in common across the board: we believe that it is wrong to mistreat someone because they are fat. That’s it."
To which I say, bollocks. Do you want me to start an organization because I am too attractive (TOOSEXY) or my breasts are too large and men stare at them (BOOBIES)? Maybe I should start an organisation for women with blonde hair who are prejudiced against because we are regarded as bimbos (BLONDEPAIN). Or maybe I should start a campaign for people with nice legs. Then I can start a campaign about it (LEGAGONY), go on Dr. Phil and share my agony: "People just look at my legs and don't realize that I have a PhD from Harvard." Or how about starting a campaign for people who are too smart to work at McDonalds (JOBLESSEGGHEADS)?
All I am saying is, grow up. In the world in which we live attractive thin people are top of the heap, fat people are bottom of the heap. If you wish to participate in this world you should play by the rules. If you wish to start an Isle of Fatos where donuts grow on trees, please do so, but please don't ask for special treatment in this world.
Let's wake up and smell the coffee. You are not fat because you have a slow metabolic rate. You are not fat because it is 'glandular' or 'genetic' or you have a food 'addiction'. You are fat because you overeat. Look, I've done it. Reach for a chocolate biscuit every time you feel low. Guess what, it makes you fat.
One of the problems about obesity is that eating huge amounts of food isn't illegal. I watched this program the other day about a 750 lb man who was in some detox hospital type place, where he was meant to lose weight and get better, and his wife was sneaking him in donuts and bags of chips. I said to a friend, who is a dietician, "I couldn't believe they didn't just chuck him out. I mean, he was just killing himself. If a drug addict who was meant to be detoxing smuggled in heroin, he'd be thrown out." And she said, "They can't do that, because donuts aren't illegal."
Quite frankly, this NAAFA organisation is doing fat people a huge disservice. Rather than accepting themselves they should realize that their eating is out of control. And while I'm at it, obese people really should have to pay for two seats on the plane.

Excellent idea, I'm up for joining TooSexy with you. This could be a global movement in a week. BG x
I have a joke that was made by Scottish comedian Craig Ferguson on that very subject.
"I'm fat because I've a glandular problem. Yes, I've a gland that makes me a greedy bastard."
I agree with you, but I do feel sorry for fat children who are fed ridiculous amounts by their parents. This way of life must be hard to grow out of once they are adults. All the same, being fat doesn't make you stupid and everyone knows the basic laws of biology. Eat heaps, do no exercise = fat. Simple as that.
I wouldn't mock someone for being fat, but I can't say I think they should be given any kind of break or special treatment- it's their life choice.
Sympathy?! - 'right-sized' people are the ones who are being discriminated against - forced to absorb the cost of the overeaters' gluttonous behavior (which I don't deny their right to engage in), we pay higher employment and insurance costs because they're less productive (miss more time from work) and unhealthy. Sorry I can't be made to feel bad when I ask them to contain their gelatinous tissue if it infringes on my space (planes, stadium, etc.)
. . . much luck with your "too large" breasts!
benefitscroungingscum....I am proud to welcome you to the TooSexy movement. People don't understand how being pretty can actually greatly diminish one's quality of life. This really is a syndrome and we need special treatment.
misssy m.....true, that is bad, making kids fat, because I believe they then have a greater propensity to pack on the poundage in later life.
jr...thanks for your support. Fat people also cause global warming would you believe:

Recently, in the UK, they've started putting pictures of cancer victims on packets of cigarettes. Maybe they should put pictures of obese people on doughnut bags to show the effects of too much fat and sugar?
Sx
I'd quite enjoy watching them bounce up and down on a trampoline. Maybe they need better advice on careers.
Motto of the Fat Acceptance organization: Would You Like Fries With That?
Mmmmmm, donuts!
I think people have a lot of angst here in the US. We worry about our petty problems and overindulge ourselves. You could even say that the banking and loan crisis is rooted in that trend, people who bought things they wanted but really couldn't afford. It's quite easy to put on weight with all the junk food around, so easily accessible any time of the day or night, pizza merely 15 minutes away from being delivered to your door. I always say, if a person can change something then it's probably OK to joke about it (clothes, hair styles, etc). I feel for the fat peeps, it's not always easy to lose weight, but in the end it is a choice and they have to own up to that. I don't make fun of the fat, nobody's perfect and it's a slow process for the obese to get down to a healthy weight. I guess they are just asking for the rest of us to be respectful of their lifestyle choices no matter how unhealthy those choices may be (think smokers). Anywho, what could it hurt to give them a little dignity, maybe it'll make them feel better and they'll lose some of that angst and with it the weight! ;^)
I think you just committed blog-suicide, Thinzilla.
The blogosphere is made up of 87% fat fucks, 12% man-haters and 1% opportunists looking to prey on the other 99%.
You have just made an enormous amount of enemies, who will probably mobilize their entire force against you as soon as they've finished their pre-breakfast snacks...
scarlet blue...
Maybe they should put pictures of obese people on doughnut bags to show the effects of too much fat and sugar?
that is one cool idea! wouldn't put me off donuts though.
Gorilla Bananas...
I'd quite enjoy watching them bounce up and down on a trampoline.
excellent idea, maybe they could join your circus or this could be the beginning of a new novelty sports competition, Fat Olympics, sponsored by Dunkin Donuts?
xl...
Would You Like Fries With That?
Reply: Yes, with extra mayo and can I supersize that?
Wow, that was awkward...
Mmmmmm, donuts!
Freshly cooked Krispy Kremes is my preference
badside...

I know, that's why I never have a credit card at home or I would be 750 lb!!
fingers...
I'm dying to have some NAAFA folks come over here and chew the fat with me ...but I don't seem to be able antagonize them like you do. You are the master. I am not worthy.
Can you start one for men that don't have hoards of nubile young women between the ages of 18 and 25 knocking on their door begging to have sex with them?
I'd pay my fee to help wipe this scourge.
This post is awesome. The fatty acceptance movement reminds me of the Cow Supervisor Bias series from Dilbert - "I overcame a lot of bias against cows to get this job" lol:

I'm founding UMAG... Ugly Middle Aged Guys. We need support and love too.
Quite right. Obesity is a disease not a life choice! And like smoking it's a disease that everybody else has to pay for. Sure some of the fault it with food manufacturers who pump their products full of sugar and corn syrup but there is such a thing as individual responsibility. We all choose what we eat and how much. Human beings aren't designed to function properly shaped like zeppelins...
If obesity is a disease then fat people could call off work saying they're calling in "fat"...what a rip off.
I have my own problems over here as an average-height (for ireland) man in the Netherlands - they think I'm practically a pigmy. Thankfully I don't have fat to add to my pains.
Somechileanwoman - ha ha ha !
You're spot on, Emma.
I think the looming depression will put paid to all sorts of excess.
The lack of self-control in society is a disgrace.
While I agree with you that being fat is unhealthy, you are way out of line in your stereotypes of all fat people being lazy and eating "donuts" all day.
I'm fat. I also do intense cardio for an hour a day, six days a week. I also limit my caloric intake to my BMR. But guess what?
I'm still fat.
You need to check your statements on being fat having nothing to do with genetics or addictions, honey.
We ALL have issues. Unfortunately (for them) Fat people's issues are out there for everyone to see. While it's true that some fat people are lazy blobs, there are quite a few that overeat to compensate for internal issues.
I agree with you that as a society we should "pay" for their issues...just like I don't think that we should pay for other people's issues. Life is a choice. You can either choose to make it better, or you can wallow in your oily mess. I don't want to have to abdicate 1/2 of my airplane seat space (that I paid for!) to you because you have't dealt with your issues. Paying for an extra seat is your cost.
Also, being fat has a direct relation to the type of life you lead. So don't be surprised if people surmise that you can't go on a bike ride or hike up a mountain. And don't be surprised if I don't seek you out as a friend or a mate because you can't. Yes...you are the "same person" inside, fat or skinny, but I choose to spend time with people who enjoy the same things as myself.
Does frame size play a role in one's fatness? Do the bones keep growing as the layers pile on? or are they normal-sized people with additional padding? Not sure I wanna dis anyone's lifestyle choice, considering my own - as long as they don't prick my comfort bubble.
Ricky Gervais is always relevant to my interests!
Wow, that is one hate filled, titanically misinformed post.
I'm not sure why the starving children were included in it, but as a device, it works well to keep the fat hatred thriving.
On the other hand, you illustrate well why it is that millions of young girls are barfing on a regular basis until they die of heart attacks, or dropping dead just to stay on a runway, where, of course, they can inspire a whole lot of other young women and girls to starve along. All so people will like them, think of them as being pretty and "healthy" looking, and "slim". You have to be slim or there's no point, you're not "healthy", you're not "nice", you're not moral, you'll be blamed for the starving children who have to eat dirt and Crisco.
Have to give you credit, though: you make the reason why it's worth dying to avoid the hatred and ignorance people hold against "Fatties" crystal clear.
aurumgirl....Why hatefilled?
Obesity is the leading cause of preventable death after smoking, sorry to be factually accurate on this.
Note I said that I don't think women should aspire to look like models. Also I am by no means thin yet I have never barfed, been anorexic, been on a diet or been obsessive about my weight. I have overeaten on occasion but at some point realized the equation of eat too much = become fat. It's not rocket science.
Putting the starving people into the argument is something you heavy people don't want to hear. As we used to say at school: "Ever seen a fat Ethiopian?" No.
NAAFA naff off. By the way, is that a Cheeky Girl on the left, admiring Lembit Opek's breaststroke (or have they split up - I am so behind the times. All work and no play).
I don't care what people weigh. I just don't want to hear them whine decades down the line about their "right" to free fuckin' health care because they spent decades treating their bodies like sewage dumps.
But, dahlink, I must challenge you on one thing here: Dunkin', not Krispy.
I like that strangers are fat. They are the uncompetitive competition.
hehee, i love that ricky gervais clip. so true.
I was bullied at work for losing a little weight and being a uk size 8, which for my frame and height is normal (i could easily be one size smaller and still be a very healthy weight). My colleagues were all overweight and the biggest one of them, she was severely obese, took it upon herself to remind me every day that i must be sick and that i look like a 13 year old boy and i look disgusting etc etc. they all pretended to be really concerned about me and went around telling people that i probably have an eating disorder! it really annoyed me that everyone in the office thought that it was ok for the obese woman to hurt my feelings by telling me that i look awful and that i must be sick, but it wouldn't have been politically correct for me to point out to her that her weight was a much more serious health risk and she'd probably die prematurely if she didn't do something about it.
the problem is that because the majority of people are overweight, hence slightly overweight is normal (here the average size is uk size 16, i think) and so healthy sized people look really skinny.
sorry, i go on, but i could go on for much longer :) i'm glad someone speaks out about this, because it's an issue that's annoyed me a long time! the main issue is that people are used to eating too much and even when they think they're eating little, they're still eating too much and they also eat too much sugar and processed crap and that is why they don't lose weight. over and out :)
Wow, I bet 'arumgirl' isn't terribly fat...coz she's certainly not very jolly.
You plonker !!!
Defending obesity by linking eating disoreders to the media's obsession with waif-like stick insects is a ridiculous argument. Both behaviours are excessive and dangerously unhealthy.
That's the point...
If a fat person is taking up half your airline seat and you take the time and effort to point it out to the flight attendant, they will either move the fattie to a double seat if it is available and then tell them "buy more room" next time OR, if there isn't a double seat available, toss the fattie right off the plane.
The arm rest MUST go down and all passengers MUST be buckled into their seat before the flight takes off, it's a rule. I know because there is a fat guy that is probably still stuck at O'Hare due to me. All it takes is a quick discussion with airline personnel to be seated comfortably.
I agree. Buy thongs before donuts. The less donuts you eat, the less fabric you will need for the thong. A win-win!
although I totally agree the Fats shouldn't get special treatment, eating addiction is now officially considered one of the 8 addictions:
alcohol
drugs
gambling
sex
shopping
smoking
caffeine
The only reason I know this is my memoir is about my struggle with alcohol (NOT A DISEASE)and I read just about every book on the topic. Turns out there's a part of the brain that wires us to be addicts. That's why some people quit one only to pick up another.
God I miss smoking and alcohol.
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed
reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Please look up PCOS or in the UK PCOD and stop being mean. If someones endocrine system is messed up, there is sometimes f*ckall one can do about it.
Yes some fat people overeat. Many don't. I don't quite get the need for a fat acceptance group either - but you are being just as thick but in a different area of the body.
